We began again with breakfast at the Old Latin School. Have I mentioned that German breakfasts are THE BEST BREAKFASTS IN THE WORLD?!?!? I became convinced of this while visiting friends over 20 years ago in Ulm, and I’ve never changed my mind – or had reason to even consider changing it. Don’t get me wrong – I love eggs and toast and bacon, American-style. I love chilaquiles for a Mexican breakfast. But ounce for ounce, nothing compares to a German breakfast.
Eggs. Salami. Cheese. Fresh bread. Jam. Butter. Did I mention cheese? Because there’s definitely cheese. Coffee. Tea. Cheese.
Even in the scaled-down version provided for us, it’s still impressive, and the staff are wonderful at making sure things don’t run out. Which is impressive given the number of people running about in a sugar/Nutella-fueled frenzy, shouting back and forth excitedly with friends they haven’t seen for a year and a half.
And the kids are almost as noisy.
After breakfast and worship we have an hour-long lecture from a Ft. Wayne Seminary professor. Then we go walking about Wittenberg for a couple of hours seeing things he’s just talked about. Then lunch. Then another lecture from the curator of the International Lutheran Center, then some free time, and finally closing worship and dinner.
Today we saw the celebrated church doors Luther made famous 509 years ago. Well, they aren’t the exact same doors. Those burnt down. These are bronze doors and undoubtedly far more impressive than the original doors as they actually have the 95 Theses as part of them. Impressive!

We also saw – some CHURCHES! Including the inside of this church. And of course we had group photos, both spontaneous and more responsibly orchestrated.
