In Wittenberg – I Think!

I’m a bit groggy still. The nine hour flight from Phoenix to London, and another two and a half hour flight to Berlin, then a short night’s rest before being up and headed to the train station to ride to Wittenberg has left me a bit addled in the head. More so than usual even, which is no small statement.

Germany is a lovely country. In my undergraduate studies in history I didn’t pay much attention to Germany. I was far more interested in lands to the north. My first trip to Germany to visit friends over 30 years ago was something that happened kind of by accident, but I was pleasantly surprised to find I really like the country. Their efficiency and tidiness. Their penchant for good bread, good meat, good cheese. I still can’t get behind the whole beer obsession, but they have other things to substitute that keep me happy!

We’re staying at the Old Latin School. It was founded and built in 1564, not long after Luther lived and died, to provide schooling for boys under Reformation principles and theology. It now represents an ongoing joint effort of the LCMS and the SELK church in Germany, overseen through the creation of the International Lutheran Society of Wittenberg. The Old Latin school has, in addition to offices of the International Lutheran Center, multiple apartments and dorm-style rooms that can be rented or reserved when visiting Wittenberg. If your congregation is interested in a trip to Wittenberg, getting in touch with this group might not be a bad idea – at least as a place to stop and visit if not a place to actually stay!

Tomorrow meetings start. And I’m praying for a good night’s sleep!
