Did you know you can get a permit recognized by many countries around the world allowing you to drive in their country? I didn’t either until a few months ago.
This permit is issued by only two entities in the United States, one of which is AAA, which is where I went today. Twenty minutes and forty dollars later, I’m the proud possessor of an International Drivers Permit (IDP)! An IDP does not replace your driver’s license and is only valid in conjunction with your driver’s license. So I have to carry my license along with me as well as the IDP for it to be valid. An IDP is not valid in the United States (the issuing country in this case).
It has to be renewed annually, which means sending in a form, a fee, and two passport style photos. While I don’t think I’ll be doing much driving in Indonesia or elsewhere, I figure it’s a good idea to have the option available to me if I need to. I was pleased by how quick and easy it was to obtain!
