People here refer to Kuala Lumpur as KL. Much easier to say, for sure. That’s where I’ve been so far this week. It’s my first extended time in KL in several months and I used the opportunity to catch up with James.
James reached out to the LCMS last year, wanting to have conversations about our theology. He’s moved into the Christian faith as he’s gotten older, searching not only in different denominations and congregations but also in the writings of different historic Christians, including Luther. He’s disillusioned with much of the charismatic worship he’s experienced and appreciates our very Scriptural liturgy.

James just finished his undergraduate degree and has been teaching since the beginning of the year at a small private school. He works with children of various ages teaching them Mandarin, which he speaks “passably” as he describes it. All I know is he negotiated the ordering of our lunch with ease!
I told him I liked his shirt. He has an Orthodox Christian friend who is trying to persuade him to join the Orthodox Church. He also has connections with an Anglican congregation, but has also visited with our church partner in Malaysia a few times as well. Finding the right congregation that matches with Scripture is challenging no matter where you live. Please pray he is able to find a community he can plug in to.
I was grateful for the chance to connect in person again. Our previous meeting was almost a year ago on my first visit to KL. Hopefully I’ll be able to meet with James again sooner than a year from now! We also keep in touch via a Tuesday night Zoom group I lead with some folks from Singapore and James. Technology sure can be a great thing when used properly.
